In 2019, the 302nd Hikotai (squadron) started reequipping with the new state-of-the-art F-35. It is the first combat unit of the Japanese air force to receive the stealth fighter. Of the 42 aircraft on order, the first four were produced by Lockheed in the United Sates, all further aircraft will be built under license by Mitsubishi in Japan.
