Between 1976 and 1998, Cubas national airline operated a total of twelve of these small trijets. The Yak-40 was a forgiving and sturdy aircraft that could be operated from smaller airports without fully developed infrastructure. As with other Yak-40 models, the staircase in the tail can optionally be displayed lowered or retracted.
